The next couple of verses reveal the state of the world before a holy God - condemned because of sin. The verses are clear: "For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God" (John 3:17,18).
While many people believe that God will overlook their sin, this is not true. The truth is that if He could just overlook it, then His Son Jesus did not need to die. He died because the pricetag, or "wages of sin is death" (Ro. 6:23). Christ died because that was our penalty and He had to pay it so that you and I might go free.
It is true that God wants to save everyone, but He had to make salvation in a way that only those who in their heart turn from sin would be saved. They also must trust Christ alone for that salvation. Notice that the only condition to not be "condemned" in these verses is that you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.
Have you repented of sin and placed your faith on Christ to save you?
