At the time that Jesus Christ walked on earth with His disciples, it was a dark time. Israel had been conquered by the Romans and there was an occupying force in place. Nobody liked the soldiers and they were cruel. Israel wanted the promised Deliverer.
Another problem was that the religious leaders had become ritualistic and cold – not much love. Although they had the Scriptures, some groups were following them mechanically. The people knew the Bible was the Word of God, and they knew they should follow it if they wanted God's blessing, but few enjoyed it.
It was into this dark situation that Christ came and walked among the people. He was a light to Israel. Why was He light?
1. Because He was the Promised One that would destroy Satan's works and curse (Ge. 3:15) – but that would come later.
2. Because He was the Lamb of God that would take away the sins of the people (Jn. 1:29).
3. Because His life was unique and many people saw His Deity in His words and miracles – they knew He had the Holy Spirit.
4. Because His clear teaching illuminated the Word and will of God as no one else could do: "Never man spake like this man" (Jn. 7:46)
5. Because He gives assurance of eternity life to all that believe on Him for salvation.
Many religions today teach that works are necessary for salvation. Jesus never taught this. He always emphasized that salvation is by believing on Who Jesus is and what He did for us on the Cross – He died to pay for our sins.
This truth and light exposes the lies of darkness which aims to keep people in uncertainty about their eternal destination. The truth God brought in a time of darkness is simple - believe and be saved. It does not get much simpler than that.
Have you placed all your hope for eternity in Jesus Christ?
