One day he was caught. He had hacked into a website called InfraGard, which is an affiliate site of the FBI. A couple of days later, the FBI knocked on his door and told them they knew he did it. They gave him an ultimatum – work with us or go to jail for a potential of 26 years.
Since that time, Hector Monsegur has worked with the FBI to stop more than 300 cyberattacks on government websites and networks, including the military and NASA. He has also found many loopholes in their computer networks and warned the government about them. Seven co-conspirators have been arrested an pleaded guilty.
Hector also delivered some not so good news - which many people have probably suspected all along. He says that concerning the Internet there really is no security. Hackers can break into anything and shut them down if they wanted. He also warns that our security organizations, such as the NSA, are themselves not all that able to provide real security – and they need watching, too.
