The Christian has the promise that they can enjoy genuine forgiveness from God. Believers find that God not only takes away the eternal penalty of sin in order to provide salvation, but He also takes away the guilt.
In I John 1:9, the Bible tells us: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." While Christians will never be perfect this side of Heaven, they have this promise. For the truly saved person, sin will not cause a loss of salvation, but it will break fellowship with God - until it is confessed and forsaken. The good news is that fellowship with God can be quickly restored through going to God in prayer and confessing that you have wronged Him and been disobedient.
Sin can leave scars in the life for which there may be consequences, but the repentant believer can still enjoy a clean conscience and the peace of God. This is true no matter what the sin.
King David, who had committed murder and adultery later confessed his sin and found forgiveness. He even said that he had been blessed ("happy") once he was forgiven of it: "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile" (Ps. 32:1,2).
Before you can enjoy the peace of God, peace with God is essential first. It comes through faith in what Christ has done for your salvation on the Cross by dying for your sin and asking Him to forgive and save you.
Do you have peace with God now? If you are a Christian, are you enjoying the peace of God now? If not, He is only a prayer away. Why not ask Him to forgive and cleanse you now?
