Yes, most people know that Christ was born and laid in a manger. But the real reason for His coming is almost spoken of tongue-in-cheek, like "Oh yeah, He died for our sins, too." Indeed He did.
It is very important that God's people - born-again Christians - remember what Christ did for us. His birth was only just the beginning of why Christ came to earth. When the angel appeared to Joseph to encourage him to go ahead and marry Mary, he said "Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins" (Mt. 1:20,21).
It is the salvation from sin that gives us reason for rejoicing. Our sin had condemned us ("For the wages of sin is death" Ro. 6:23) and we needed a Savior. Since our good works could not erase sin (Eph. 2:8,9), we needed another way. Thank God that He sent His Son to provide for us such a perfect and thorough salvation! Have you taken time to worship Him and thank Him for where He redeemed you from (Hell) and to - Heaven?
One way to celebrate the season in your home on Christmas (tomorrow) is to take the Bible and read the Christmas story (Lk. 2:1-20) to the family and briefly discuss it before opening any gifts. Remember that there was no room for pregnant Mary and Joseph in the inn - and in many homes, there still is little or no room for Christ even while saying they are celebrating His birth! Reading the true Christmas story will help the family and others gathered for the holidays to remember the real reason for Christmas - and provide an opportunity to be thankful for so great a salvation.
