When his adulterous affair was exposed, Gen. David H. Petraeus was the Commander of the American Forces in both Afghanistan and Iraq. The woman was a Reserve army officer, Paula Broadwell, who was at the time writing the general’s biography.
When Broadwell's computer was investigated, classified information was on it. The question that will have to be resolved in this case is whether Petraus gave her access to his own C.I.A. email account, and any other classified information he had access to.
After the matter about the possible security breach was made public, it was not believed that any documents that affected national security were involved. President Obama also backed up this idea in a statement of his own. Prosecutors realize that other felony charges have been brought up on other military personnel for much less serious offenses, than what they want against Gen. Petraus.
