All during the recording, no response is ever given to the pilot's efforts to get back into the cockpit. No effort was made by the co-pilot to make contact with ground control.
The pilots have not yet been identified, but both are said to have been very experienced. In the U.S., a single pilot is never left alone in the cockpit anymore after 911. A flight crew member is required to temporarily fill the seat until they return, always having at least two people in the cockpit.
Authorities have no idea yet what happened to the co-pilot. The aircraft went from 38,000 feet to about 6,000 feet in eight minutes, where it crashed into the Alps in France at high speed.
