The violence included killing 14 policemen, and the occupying of schools and state buildings. Artillery fire could be heard in places, and some buildings were heavily damaged.
Apparently some had hoped and thought that a long problem with terrorists was over, thinking it was finished in 1996. Now it has started up again.
Although not certain, many are wondering if ISIS is behind the fresh attacks. Even if they may not have been present, they may be causing it.
Some believe ISIS may be behind it because of the immensity of the attack. A second reason is because Putin was due to give an annual speech to his country's Federation Council.
As Russian anti-terrorist forces began fighting immediately against the terrorists, they were surprised that victory did not come as quickly as they had hoped. A number of insurgents had died, but the numbers are not complete. When it comes to fighting terrorists, Russia can be just about as merciless as the terrorists.
