Although the hospital did perform the sterilization procedures recommended by the manufacturer, it appears that the procedures did not go far enough. At this point, the hospital has upgraded the cleaning process.
The UCLA Ronald Reagan hospital uses the endoscope equipment to look down people's throats with a light and camera system. Seven people are known to have been infected, and two have died from an infection of carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, or CRE.
Another 170 people have been contacted by the hospital. The possible superbug exposure took place between October and January of this year. The hospital is offering each of them a home test kit which will be checked by the hospital.
