The current outbreak is the worst one in Hawaii since some time in the 1940's. So far, the state's governor has not declared a state-wide emergency because it is only occurring on the Big Island.
Dengue fever often produces milder symptoms in younger people, but it can become serious in those who are older, or who have weak immune systems. Symptoms include a sudden high fever, severe headaches, severe pain in the muscles and joints, nausea, vomiting, a skin rash, and mild bleeding.
The symptoms can become serious, and lead to death in some cases, caused by the dengue hemorrhagic fever. There is no vaccine for dengue fever or a medicine to treat it. Pain relievers that contain acetominophen will help, but medicines containing aspirin should be avoided because it can make bleeding worse.
