Afterwards, in was found in poultry farms in the Netherlands, and then in the United Kingdom. Because it has now been discovered in a wild bird, it means that wild birds could be the source of the virus.
In an effort to control the outbreak, more than 200,000 ducks, turkeys, and chickens were killed. Health officials say that once the virus is discovered among a group of birds, it is necessary to destroy the whole flock.
Because of the various locations it has been found in, it is possible that this could a Europe-wide problem. One possible solution is to keep all poultry indoors.
So far, there have not been any cases of the H5N8 virus in humans. It is, however, highly contagious among birds.
