Apparently, more than one story had been partially fabricated over the years. The one that brought out the issue of exaggerations was one where he talked about a military mission in Iraq in 2003.
Williams has been relieved of his duties immediately. The NBC Nightly News, which he hosted, has been jeopardized in terms of credibility. The CEO of NBCUniversal, Steve Burke, says that "his actions are inexcusable." Lester Holt will be filling in for him in his absence.
Burke also said that Williams is committed to winning back the trust that he lost.
Comment: Believers in Christ need to realize from this incident that there is a law of sowing and reaping. We see this principle in Galatians 6:7: "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap."
While all of us have sins in our past that we are not proud of, we do need to be reminded from time to time that sin does not pay. The child of God is not immune to this Biblical precept of sowing and reaping. Paul was talking to Christians in this epistle.
While we are forgiven for the purpose of salvation, sins that we tolerate after salvation can be costly in terms of a lack of power and testimony. Thank God that He does forgive us and cleans our slate at salvation, but sometimes He does allow us to reap what we have sown in this life after salvation.
We need to watch daily for those sins that displease Him and get clear of them. Thank God that He is willing to help every child of God get victory, but we need to come before Him and honestly confess our need of His forgiveness and strength.
