A doctor who had been treating Ebola patients in Sierra Leone became infected with the virus. In spite of some experimental therapies, the doctor from Uganda rapidly grew weaker and soon had kidney failure and was put on a ventilator.
A doctor treating him, Dr. Helmut Geiger had heard of a company in California called Aethelon Medical that was experimenting with filtering a virus out of the blood. They had some success with it and Helmut wanted a chance to try it against Ebola. The filters are connected to dialysis machines.
After receiving the filters, the treatment doctors discovered that there was a great improvement after just 6.5 hours of treatment. The filters removed much of the "viral load" (quantity of virus in the body), and brought it down to where the body's own immune system could handle it.
Basically it worked. It was not long until the patient no longer needed either the ventilator or dialysis. In fact, he was soon walking around the clinic and is expected to be discharged soon.
Because he was also given several treatment therapies, it cannot be certain yet that the filtering alone helped obtain his recovery. More experimenting needs to be performed to ensure it worked.
