The report exposed that there is a suicide about every 40 seconds on average. When you put it together and do the math, this means that there are more than 15,000 per week, almost 65,000 per month, and over 788,000 in a year!
These statistics were then compared to the number of violent deaths in a year, which was about 1.5 million. This includes deaths from war, conflicts and other violent causes. Comparing these numbers reveals that the number of suicides each year is more than half of this number! That is truly staggering!
It is also interesting to consider what ages people are where most of the suicides occur. The highest rate occurs with those over 70. Then the next highest group is for those between the ages of 15 and 29, where it is the second leading cause of death.
These numbers amaze me. This is especially true when I consider that they could have a real solution and suicide is not necessary. Having been a Christian for most of my life, I have found that Christ genuinely and thoroughly satisfies those who come to Him.
There are several reasons why someone may commit suicide. Reasons may include depression, guilt, seeing no viable solution to current problems, broken relationships, etc. Friend, if you are faced with the possibility of suicide, let me encourage you to seek help immediately.
Realize first, however, that Christ offers hope and help for your need. He is also willing to forgive sin at any time. He died for this purpose. Then, once saved, He will also cleanse you of the guilt of sin, and give you everlasting life. He promised this in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Also, I might add that there is no one who He will not save. Your past does not matter to Him – if you are willing to turn from it and trust Him to save you. He loves you immensely and will show you that love once you know Him as Savior. Why not ask Him to do so right now?
He also promises real peace of mind – and joy. He can show you how. Listen to these words: “Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Psalm 16:11).
