After Joseph had heard about Mary becoming pregnant, he had thought about terminating their marriage. At this point they were only engaged, but in that society an engagement most likely meant an arranged marriage.
As he is debating what he will do, an angel of God appears to him and delivers the message we see in these two Bible verses. The first thing that angel does is to calm his fears - no Mary had not been unfaithful to Joseph.
The child in her is caused by a miracle of God, the angel said. No man was involved; and of course, Joseph knew he did not get her pregnant.
The next part of the angel's message is tremendous news. It is this message that makes Christmas worth celebrating over and over – for Millennia.
The angel said that the Child will "save his people from their sins." Note that he did not say that He will try and save them; or that He will begin to save them; or even that He would help them to be saved. No – he said, He will save them. In other words, what this Child would do will be all that is necessary for salvation. No more needs to be added to it.
Of course, the Child grew up to become the Man. He would be, as John the Baptist introduced Him, "the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world" (John 1:29).
Faith in Christ and what He has done for us on the Cross is all that is needed for salvation. Christ paid the full price for our salvation – that is why He came.
If you will be sorry for your sin and turn from it, God has promised to save you if you will believe that Christ is all you need for salvation. Listen carefully to this well-known verse in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
Have you believed this joyous news of Christmas that Christ is all you need for salvation? It must be a personal belief in Christ, and you must call on Him in prayer and ask Him to forgive and save you.
