Nemtsov was 55 years old and was walking across a bridge close to the Kremlin, when he was shot four times in the back from a car that passed him. He had been a former deputy prime minister. He was walking with a woman who was an acquaintance. He was not hurt.
Putin was quick to offer condolences and said that the murder was a provocation. He also ordered that the chiefs of the top law enforcement agencies personally oversee the investigation.
The opposition leader was very outspoken about Putin's handling of the Ukraine issue, and had personally accused Putin's government of stealing billions of dollars from the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Nemtsov knew that Putin might try to kill him.
President Obama called it a "brutal murder" and called on Putin to provide a transparent investigation.
