While the form of slavery has changed, it is slavery still because it means that other people have control over an individual that deprives them of their rights. It also is for the purpose of exploiting them. This form of slavery occurs in 167 nations.
Five of the 167 countries have as many as 61 percent of known slaves today. Those countries having the most slaves are: India (14.3 million); China (3.2 million); Pakistan (2.1 million); Uzbekistan (1.2 million); and Russia (1.0 million).
While India has the highest number of slaves among all nations, it still is only about 1.14 percent of the entire population of the country. Uzbekistan, on the other hand, has an incredible 3.97 percent of its population living in a slave condition.
Comment: While the thought of slavery certainly is not new, nor should it be too surprising that it still exists, as Christians, we realize that there are billions who are still slaves to sin. Christ has not made them free yet. It is important to remember that the heart of man is naturally prone to sin and unable to obey God, but Christ can set that heart free that trusts in Him, and His freedom enables us to follow God and please Him. We need to pray for all those in slavery - both physical and spiritual – that they might be able to know God's true freedom.
