The Mayo Clinic performed a large study of 3,016 brains. Almost half of the brains were known to come from people who had either dementia or Alzheimer's. They also knew that the people were in different stages of the disease.
After analyzing the brains for more than a year, Mayo concluded that tau was a more accurate measuring tool when determining the stage of Alzheimer's the person was in. The more tau there was, the worse the Alzheimer's. It was not found to be true with amyloid.
Studying Alzheimer's and its causes is very important today because it affects so many people. About every 67 seconds, someone else will get diagnosed with the disease. Understanding its causes and how to combat it may be able to help prevent or treat it better. For now, there is no known way to do either.
