The official, Ma Chaoqun, had been the former manager of the Beidaihe Water Supply Corporation. His stash was so large, the state news agency Xinhua said it was "shocking."
The man had 82 pounds of gold (at today's price of $1189.00 per ounce, this is equal to $1,559,968)! Then, he had documents to 68 houses, and another $19.6 million in cash!
The government of China is cracking down on such corruption. Ma has been charged with bribery, embezzlement, and misappropriation of public funds.
Comment: Going after gold and riches is certainly not new in any country, but it is important to do it legally. What is more valuable is making sure that you are going after both the true riches and the lasting ones. When you gather riches by corrupt methods, be sure your sins will find you out – either in this life or in the next.
For those who know the truths of God's Word, and the Savior, we can certainly confess, with Solomon, that the fruit (results and benefits) "is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver" (Proverbs 8:19). There are also no regrets either if we have been faithful to Him!
