The landslide occurred on Friday, and the death toll so far is around 18. A number of people were injured in the mudslide, and about 11 of them have serious injuries. 350 people had to be relocated to temporary shelters. At least 71 people are still missing.
Rescuers immediately began digging with anything they could find – including their hands. Heavy equipment was brought in later, but blocked roads delayed their arrival. Troops and police were brought in to help with the rescue and recovery efforts.
Rain is much heavier this time of year. This month has already had 7.9 inches, which is more than is usually received all month. Monsoon season goes from October to April. Rain has caused the rescue efforts to be halted temporarily.
