In the not too distant past, most everyone had measles shots, and these were quite successful in totally eliminating the disease from America's shores in 2000. Now there is a different threat.
Many young people today, for one reason or another have not had the measles vaccine. This means the appearance of measles in the U.S. could start a small outbreak. It is highly contagious.
There is no doubt that measles can be deadly. Before the vaccines, about 400 children would die from measles annually. This year the CDC says that there have been 610 cases of measles this year.
