The disease, diabetes, is easily detected and can be controlled – or at least held off for years. One reason that many people don't know they have it is because it start's slowly and usually has no pain or noticeable health problems associated with it. But what they also don't know is that once it starts, it is already starting to damage your organs – and you may not be aware of it.
It is believed that about 30 percent of Americans have diabetes and don't know it. About 28.4 million Americans have already been diagnosed with it, which is about 12 percent of all adults in this country.
The good news is that if diabetes can be caught early, then steps can be taken to minimize the damage and, in some cases, even eliminate it. A simple blood test can reveal whether you have it or not. In the early stages, healthy living – eating right and exercise – can often help bring it under control, and medications may not be needed.
