The study was performed at Carnegie Mellon University’s Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The lead author of the study, Dr. Sheldon Cohen says that having close physical contact, such as one gets from hugging, seems to have a direct correlation to how healthy the recipients and givers are.
Those who receive more close contact from their support group, that is, more kind touches or hugs, seem to be more protected from infections and other illnesses. It is not known if the hugs themselves produce these results, or if the perceived support has this effect. Either way, a hugging, closer and intimate relationship results in better health for all those involved.
