Although the practice is not nationwide, it is believed to occur in about three percent of the population. During the holidays, some of the Swiss prepare the meat similar to rabbit – with garlic and white wine.
There are no laws on the books that prevent people from eating their cat or dog. There are laws, however, which prevent people from selling the meat. Campaigns are taking place to try and stop it. Last year, a campaign was successful that tried to make it illegal to sell cat fur.
A petition is being circulated against the practice of eating cats and dogs. It has been delivered to parliament with about 16,000 signatures on it.
