The company, Sunfire GmbH, uses what it calls "Power to liquid" technology. With a technique that was developed around 1925, their method can make synthetic petrol, diesel, and kerosene.
The process, when combined with solid oxide electrolyser cells (SOECs), convert electricity into steam. The electricity is provided by wind and solar power, which then helps to generate oxygen. Then, hydrogen reduces the CO2 from the air to CO, and then the H2 and the CO are combined to create a high purity fuel.
The "rig" that the company is using now is capable of producing about a barrel a day. Legislation is now needed to allow investors to support the program and go to industrial size production.
