The train, which was traveling at 79mph, hit the truck after applying the brakes, and derailed in Oxnard, California. The passenger cars had special safety features that helped absorb the impact.
No one was killed, but 28 people had to be taken to hospitals. They suffered from broken limbs, injuries to the back and neck, and head trauma. Four people are in critical condition, including the train's engineer.
The driver of the pick-up truck and trailer had turned onto the track and then became stuck. He left the scene and was picked up later more than 1.5 miles away. He has been arrested and faces charges of felony hit-and-run.
