The blame for the increased number of cases is believed to lie in a new vaccine, which came out in 1990. It replaced an older one that had some side effects, but the newer one is not as strong as the one it replaced. Apparently it does not last as long as the older one, too.
Between the months of January to November 26, there has been 9,935 cases. These cases are the ones that were reported, and they have occurred at all grade levels. San Diego County has been hit the hardest, with 1,819 cases.
Only about 10 percent of the people that have been getting whooping cough have not been inoculated. This year, there has only been one death, but last year there were 18.
