As expected, his invitation has been met with a lot of criticism from conservative black pastors. The president's defense of his action was beyond incredible for someone who claims to be a Christian, saying that: "When people say (the Bible) is synonymous with God and the truth," he continued. "We can't be guided and dictated by a first-century world view."
One pastor, Dwight McKissick, who is the senior pastor of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, decried the president's comment by saying that he is trampling "on the beliefs of the school's founders."
McKissick went on to say: "It is so disappointing and disheartening that at the American Baptist College, where the land was bought and paid for by Baptists who took the Bible literally, their blood, sweat and tears are being trampled on." He also said: "We believe the Bible and its teachings. We believe homosexuality – as a matter of fact all the Bible talks about as sin – is sin."
Comment: It seems to me that this college president does not value the Word of God very much – if at all. God's people down through the ages have taught very plainly that the Bible is God's Word – inspired – and it is in its entirety the very words He gave us to believe and hold to. Although i do not know him, I commend Bro. McKissick for his bold stand. I'm sure other alumni will back him.
God's Word makes it plain that we are to pass on to the next generation the very words and truth taught to us by those who held the truth so valiantly before us. Jude tells the Christian: "Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints" (Jude 1:3). The Bible does not merely present a "first-century worldview," but it is the very eternal dictates of God Himself. His truths have always been truths, and they will be His truth forever: “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven” (Psalm 119:89).
While God does love and wants us to love, love is never to be put above his truth. God loved the world, but He gives people a choice: turn from sin to God, or suffer the consequences. Even His infinite love will never overlook sin unless that individual repents and comes to Christ for forgiveness and regeneration. In order for us to know what sin we are to repent of and avoid, His Word plainly tells us. God also said that believers are to come out from among them and be separate.
We are to be the influencers of the world to bring the lost to a holy God for reconciliation and salvation, not to give our pulpits and lecterns to people whose very lives contradict that holiness and let them teach us. God never changes and He expects that we won't either. The good news of the Gospel is that He will forgive anyone who truly turns from all that God calls sin and trusts Christ to be their Savior.
