In addition to the president's resigning, the government of the country has also resigned. The Houthi had taken control of the capital in Yemen this past September.
The country is looking for a peaceful transition. Both sides have agreed to meeting with a special envoy from the U.N. They are currently in negotiations with the envoy, Jamal Benomar, who is a Moroccan diplomat.
The United States White House is concerned about the transition because the Houthis are allied with Iran and the former president of Yemen, Ali Abdullah Saleh. While Hadi has been pro-American, he had little support in the country for it.
The Houthis now control much of northern Yemen. They have shut off the border between the northern part of the country and the southern part, and oil exports from the south have been shut down. This has some concerned about a possible succession. Iran has also cut off financial aid to the government, leaving it with no money.
