Nanotubes are small tubes made of carbon that are extremely small; so small, in fact, that an ordinary microscope cannot see them. They are man-made for use in electronics, but they also are a by-product of catalytic converters in cars. The same type of nanotubes on car tailpipes were found in the lungs of the children sampled.
Particles as small as carbon nanotubes (called particulate matters – PMs), have been identified as one of the primary causes of both disability and death on a worldwide basis. They can cause respiratory and cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and diabetes, after long-term exposure. Short-term exposure can cause various respiratory diseases.
Nanotubes have been found around the world in various places, including polar ice cores. Because of their wide dispersal, the researchers conclude that it is likely that they are already in every person's lungs.
